If you are located in Sweden and need a document notarized for use in the United States, it is not always necessary to visit a U.S. embassy or consulate. In many cases, the notarization can be completed online using Remote Online Notarization (RON).
Remote Online Notarization allows a commissioned U.S. notary public to perform a notarization through a live audio-video session over the internet. Using a computer, tablet, or smartphone, the signer connects with the notary, presents identification, and signs the document electronically while the notary observes.
A key feature of U.S. remote notarization laws is that the notarial act is legally tied to the notary’s commissioning state, not the physical location of the signer. This means a person physically located in Sweden may still complete a valid U.S. notarization online, provided the notary is commissioned in a U.S. state that authorizes remote notarization.
During a typical remote notarization session, the notary will:
- Verify the signer’s identity using a government-issued photo ID (often a passport for international signers)
- Confirm the signer’s willingness and awareness of the document being signed
- Observe the electronic signing of the document in real time
- Apply an electronic notary seal and digital signature
Remote notarization is commonly used by individuals outside the United States who need to sign documents related to U.S. legal, financial, corporate, or real estate matters.
To complete a remote notarization session, you will generally need:
- A valid government-issued photo ID
- A device with a camera and microphone
- A stable internet connection
If the notarized document will be used in Sweden or another foreign country, you should also confirm with the receiving party whether the document will require an apostille. Apostilles are issued by the Secretary of State in the notary’s commissioning state and may be required for documents intended for international use under the Hague Apostille Convention.
